Dresser-Methven Funeral Home began when Swedish immigrant Andrew Erickson opened an undertaking and furniture business on Union Street in 1912. Erickson operated the businesses solo for a number of years, but as the Mora area continued to expand, he found himself in need of help. In 1922, Claude Dresser was hired. In 1934, a separate building for the mortuary was built on Maple Avenue. In 1939, Claude purchased the furniture and funeral business from Andrew. In 1948, Chisholm, MN native George Olson was hired to take over the duties of funeral director. When Claude retired in 1951, George purchased the funeral, furniture, and a flower and gift business. After over thirty years in the funeral industry, George Olson retired in 1983. The funeral home was then sold to Peter Methven, who also had the funeral businesses in Hinckley and Sandstone, MN. In 1999, Peter found himself in need of help and hired funeral director Nate Froehling. Less than a year later, Ryan Christianson also joined the staff as a funeral director. In 2013, the funeral home was moved across the street to the old Kanabec State Bank building, and after extensive remodeling, we currently have seating for 175 people. On October 3, 2018, Peter retired, and Nate and Ryan officially took over the funeral and cremation business. They are proud to continue the tradition of quality funeral care that Peter began.

Methven Funeral Home in Sandstone began when Adolph Larson came into the funeral business in 1924. In 1929, the home moved to its present location on 5th Street. In 1953, Art Larson purchased the business from his father and began running the day-to-day operation. Bill Haglund bought the funeral home from Art in the 1970’s and renamed it Larson-Haglund Funeral Home. Bill suddenly and unexpectedly passed away in 1981. Tatting-Methven Funeral Home owner Peter Methven helped Bill’s widow, Diane, for a number of months before purchasing the business from her. It then became Methven Funeral Home. In 1999, Peter found himself in need of help and hired funeral director Nate Froehling. Less than a year later, Ryan Christianson also joined the staff as a funeral director. In 2002, an aggressive remodeling project began which doubled the size of the chapel, making it the largest in Pine County with availability to seat over 150 people. Methven Funeral Home in Sandstone also houses an on-site crematory known as East Central Cremation Services. On October 3, 2018, Peter retired, and Nate and Ryan officially took over the funeral and cremation business. They are proud to continue the tradition of quality funeral care that Peter began. In 2022, the building was remodeled to update the interior, add a bathroom, and a family room.

The current location of Tatting-Methven Funeral Home was built around 1906 as a Methodist Church. It later became the Hills Funeral Chapel and then was purchased by Don Tatting. Don was ready to retire in 1976, and coincidentally, his nephew - Peter Methven - was just graduating with a degree in mortuary science. Don placed a call to Peter, who was living in Saint Paul at the time, and offered to sell him the business. Peter accepted and moved to Hinckley with his family. Don continued to help Peter with the funeral home for many years before his death in 1999. In 1999, Peter found himself in need of help and hired funeral director Nate Froehling. Less than a year later, Ryan Christianson also joined the staff as a funeral director. The building was extensively remodeled in 2001 to offer a much more spacious, comfortable atmosphere. On October 3, 2018, Peter retired, and Nate and Ryan officially took over the funeral and cremation business. They are proud to continue the tradition of quality funeral care that Peter began.

Peter Methven built the current Mille Lacs Lake Funeral Home building with local contractor Vern Harms in 1987. Through a sequence of events, the funeral home had changed hands two different times. When it became available in 2005, Peter, Nate, and Ryan formed a partnership and purchased it. On October 3, 2018, Peter retired, and Nate and Ryan officially took over the funeral and cremation business. They are proud to continue the tradition of quality funeral care that Peter began. In 2023, an extensive remodeling project was completed to update the interior, aid in handicap accessibility, and add a family room.
