Steven William Halonen passed away Dec. 9, 2016 in Fairbanks, Alaska.  Steve was born July 17, 1950 to William and Sylvia (McLain) Halonen.  He grew up and attended school in Sandstone, Minnesota and attended college at the University of Minnesota Duluth until he was drafted to serve in the Vietnam War.  Upon his discharge from the service in 1972, Steve took over his father's construction company, later known as Halonen Construction.

Steve married Janet Olean in rural Finlayson on October 14, 1978.  To this marriage, two daughters – Jenna and Jessica were born.  In the mid 1990's Steve relocated permanently to Alaska, where work had taken him previously in the past.  Steve's construction work and business took him many places, including Russia, where he taught the Russian nationals how to mine gold.

Steve loved hunting, fishing and the outdoors.  He was very social and loved to visit with people.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Sandy Lexvold and Sharon Schubert.  He is survived by his daughters, Jenna of Apple Valley and Jessica of Waverly;  grandchildren  Jazline, Matteo and Rosa Nieves  and Aiden Halonen; brothers, Samuel (Kathie) and Stuart (Wendy); brothers-in-law, Dewey Lexvold and John Schubert; several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. on Saturday June 10, 2017 at the Methven Funeral Home in Sandstone, MN. Visitation will start at 12 p.m. and continue until the 1 p.m. memorial service at the funeral home.  Private interment will be at a later time.
