Viola Schaefbauer of Mora, MN passed away on September 25, 2026. She was 90 years old.

Viola Mary (Volk) Schaefbauer was born on March 26, 1936, she was the fifth child born out of ten. She was welcomed into the world by Romaltus and Mary Volk.

Viola grew up in Hauge, North Dakota. She met the love of her life at a dance, at the age of 17 years old. Viola and Floyd were married on October 13, 1953, in Hauge, North Dakota. Starting a devoted partnership that would span an incredible 72 years. They started their life in Mobridge, South Dakota. Then they moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Together, they raised six children—Ralph, Gail, David, Brenda, Renae, and Jim—building a life rooted in love, faith, and steadfast commitment.

While raising six children, Viola worked outside the home, taking a variety of night shift jobs to help the family financially. When living in Minneapolis, she enjoyed taking coffee, and visiting with her friends in the neighborhood. In 1972, Viola and Floyd moved to Mora, MN to a 10-acre farm where they spent most of their lives together. Viola, worked as a waitress at a friend's bar restaurant with her husband bartending on the weekends. For a brief time, Viola and Floyd owned a small Diner in Minneapolis with friends called Hermans Lunch. She managed the Modern Woodman Camps with Floyd until his retirement. She did taxes from 1989 to 1991, worked in the Senior Dining kitchen in Mora and at the Mora Bakery for a while. Viola was a highly intelligent, hard-working woman who could do anything she set her mind to, and she was the backbone of our family. As a perk of Floyds job, Viola, who enjoyed traveling, was able to go on many deserved trips. The first one was to the Bahamas, followed by a few cruises, trips to Mexico and numerous places across the US. Viola had many talents. She took great pleasure in crocheting Afghans, playing cards with siblings and cousins and in-laws, where friendly rivalry and plenty of laughter filled the room.

She also enjoyed spending time and traveling with her sisters. They would go to the casino and play the slots, and travel out to see her sister in California. They would also get crazy idea and redecorate a room; it would turn out but sometimes you would wonder how they come up with the final look.

Viola spent cherished winters at Friendly Acres in Yuma, where they played games, shared stories, and formed lasting friendships.

In the beginning when Viola was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2018, it was very hard for her; however, she persevered at home with her husband’s care until she finally went to stay at Eastwood Senior Living where she spent the final few years of her life.

Viola’s legacy is profound. She was blessed with six children; twelve grandchildren—Nicholas, Adam, Miranda, Derek, Rachael, Nicole, Shanna, Shiela, Mitchell, Jeremiah, Keegan, and Kyle; twenty greatgrandchildren—Kaitlan, Samantha, Alexia, Dustin, Brooklyn, Kennedy, Sidney, Alyssia, Preston, Hunter, Hannah, Abigail, Kiah, Brexton, Austyn, Landon, Madelyn, Owen, Ivy, and Olivia; and five great-great-grandchildren—Mason, Lillyana, Castiel, Gianna, and Vivien.

Viola created a life rich in meaning and memory. She leaves behind a legacy of warmth, resilience, and connection—a legacy carried forward.

Viola is preceded in death by her parents Romaltus and Mary Volk, her siblings Nerius, Elmer, Richard, Florence, Edith, and Lorraine. Her husband Floyd, Sons Ralph and David and great-grandson Preston.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11am on Monday, October 12, 2026 at St Mary's Catholic Church, Mora MN with a visitation from 10am to 11am, his final resting place will be St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Mora.
