Sybil Kay Welcher, of Hinckley, Minnesota passed away on October 7, 2024, at her home.  She was 84 years old.

Sybil K. Welcher was born on January 28, 1940, to Alice and Harold Matz in St. Paul, Minnesota.  She spent her childhood years in the Twin Cities area.  Sybil graduated from South St. Paul High School, class of 1958.  After graduation, Sybil worked as a nurse's aid in the St. Paul Hospital until her marriage.

Sybil married Willie Welcher on July 3, 1963, in South St. Paul.  Sybil and Willie then moved to Duluth, Minnesota where Willie was to become the Chef Manager at the newly constructed restaurant called the London House.  They lived in Duluth until the summer of 1969 when they moved to Hinckley, Minnesota.

On January 1st, 1970, the Welcher and Winkler family purchased Cassidy's Restaurant from the Clark family.  After the Winkler family sold out, the Welcher family became the sole owners and operators of Cassidy's for the next 50 years, lacking two months.  Cassidy's then finalized the sale to Tobies in December of 2019.

Those early years in Hinckley were some of Sybil's favorite times.  She loved being a stay-at-home mom, keeping busy with her church and the children's school activities.  Early on Sybil was the Sunday School Secretary which duties included taking class attendance.  There were so many Sikkink families at the time that she needed to learn.  After she got them straight, she thought she had it made.

Sybil loved to entertain.  She hosted weekly bible studies for many years and as the children grew older, weekly youth groups.  Sybil enjoyed having friends over to play their favorite game of Scrabble, and she loved to read.  Even in her later years when her eyesight failed, Sybil would read word by word, line by line with a special magnifying glass that she would hold in her hand.  Even if it took months, Sybil would be sure to complete the book.  Her other hobbies included taking pictures and home movies.  Sybil would fret a little when Willie would take movies of his fishing adventures.  Sybil would say, "I like people in movies, not movies of those darn fish!"

Sybil enjoyed gospel music and concerts.  Her favorite local gospel group was the Sailing Free's.  When she would get into the car she would play their tapes first thing.  Sometimes you might think the loud music was coming from a teenager's car, but it was just Sybil

In the summer Sybil loved to garden and can in the fall.  She always was striving to make her dill pickles taste as good as her friend Mable Rabe.  Sybil never won there, but her marinated canned green peppers were a big hit.

When the children were grown and Willie retired, Sybil went to work at Cassidy's Restaurant.  She also enjoyed this part of her life.  Sybil always loved telling jokes and playing pranks on the local customers.  But they would get back at her too.  Like the time Sybil was given a traffic violation and had to go to court.  This incident happened near Sybil's birthday.  So, they came in with a birthday cake and insisted Sybil cut the cake before going to court.  When she did, they had baked a file into the middle of the cake.  These kinds of stories could go on and on as Sybil loved mischief.

Sybil was a member of the Presbyterian Church dating back to the 1970's.  She loved her Lord and Savior and her church family.  Due to the times, Sybil has requested a private family burial, which we will honor.

Sybil is preceded in death by her parents, Alice and Harold Matz, husband Willie, and grandson Logan Deming.

She is survived by her three children; Wendy (Tom) Deming, Shawn Welcher and Stacy Welcher, two grandson's Greg (Amy) Welcher, and Noah Welcher, her sister Jane Howard, and her niece Dawn and nephew Eric, and great niece Sara, and many friends.

Sybil will be greatly missed by her family and friends and will always be in our hearts.

Sybil asked that we write this message in her obituary.  That when she passes not to mourn for her, she had a great life and she is happy to be going to be with her Lord and Savior and her loved ones who have gone before.

For there will be no parting for ever more.

We will miss her but she will always be in our hearts.
