With gratitude and loving hearts, we share the news of the passing of Steven “Bezhigoo Gahbo” Ralph St. John, who left us on September 4, 2026, at the age of 65. He passed away peacefully at his home in Hinckley, MN.

Steve was born on January 27, 1961, in Sandstone, MN, to Louis F. St. John, Sr. and Beatrice (Allen) St. John. He spent most of his life around Lake Lena and Hinckley, where he formed countless memories with family and friends. He was also a man that liked to take time out for himself and find solitude whenever he could. Known for his playful spirit, Steve was notorious for giving out nicknames to family members. Even though he didn’t have children of his own, Steve loved all of his nieces and nephews.

As a talented craftsman and artist, Steve poured his creativity into everything he did, whether it was working on projects or nurturing his beloved plants—he was known for his green thumb. In addition to his artistic skills, he loved playing horseshoes, pool, and enjoyed the tranquility of sun fishing and hunting. He also had a fondness for wrestling, having been quite the wrestler back in high school, and he was a great old-style grass dancer.

Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Louis St. John, Sr. and Beatrice Taylor, his older brother, Louis St. John, Jr., and his sister, Ruth Ann St. John.

He is survived by his loving siblings: Janice Taylor, Sylvia Wise, Ed St. John Sr., Ben St. John, Stanley St. John, Norma Diver, Wallace St. John Sr., and Harvey St. John, along with many cousins, nieces, and nephews who will cherish his memory.

A wake will begin at dusk on Monday, September 7, 2026, at the Aazhoomog Community Center to honor Steve's life, celebrating the warmth he brought to all who knew him. The funeral service will take place at the same location, starting at 10am on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. We invite friends and family to join us in paying tribute to a truly remarkable man. We will lay him to rest at Stevens Cemetery, ensuring that he is remembered for his big heart, creativity, and the joy he spread throughout his life.
