Shirley Mae Lund, 96, of Sandstone Minnesota died on November 12, 2021 at the Sandstone Health Care Center.

Shirley was born May 14, 1925 in Askov, MN, daughter of Chris and Mettie Petersen.  She attended the Askov School and graduated with the class of 1943.  She was a relief time telephone operator during her last four years of high school.  She worked at the Askov Bakery after graduating and later worked in the Co-op Store in St. Paul under her uncle, Lawrence Jensen while Jens was in the army.

On June 9, 1946 she married Jens L. Lund at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Askov where Shirley had been baptized, confirmed, and was a lifetime member.  She worked at Dick's Store and later at the Co-op Mercantile until they moved to Florida.  The couple had three children and resided in Askov until 1980 when they moved to Naples, Florida.  In 1986, they moved back to Askov.  She then did part time custodial work at the Askov Post Office.  After Jens' passing, she and her sister Josephine moved to Sandstone and shared an apartment at the Wild River Senior Apartments in June 2004.

Shirley is survived by her daughters, Virginia Lee and Cheryl (Lowell) Larson, eight grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Jens, daughter Claudia (Bruce) Nedegaard, parents Chris and Mettie Petersen, and siblings Josephine (Clarence) Jessen and Duane (Darlene) Petersen.

The family would prefer memorials be sent to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Sandstone Health Care Center, or St. Croix Hospice.

A memorial service will be held for Shirley on Saturday, November 20, 2021, at 3 pm at Bethlehem Lutheran Church Askov, MN, with Claire Edin, S.A.M. officiating. Visitation will take place at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service at Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery.
