Robert "Bob"
Gilbert
Jan 28, 1944 — May 20, 2025
Mora
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert "Bob" Eugene Gilbert, born on January 28, 1944 in Edgeley, North Dakota. Bob lived a meaningful life dedicated to family, friends, education, and community.
Graduating from Jud High School in 1962, Bob went on to attend Valley City State University from 1962 to 1966, where he earned a double major in Geography and English. During his college years, he distinguished himself as a four-year baseball player and served as team captain during his senior year, demonstrating the leadership qualities that would define his career.
In 1966, Bob married the love of his life, Susan ("Sue") Weisser. The newlyweds began their journey together in Hebron, North Dakota, where Bob taught for two years before they moved to Mora, Minnesota. There, Bob taught Geography and English, but his passion for helping others led him to pursue additional education. Through dedicated night and weekend schooling, Bob earned his Master's Degree to qualify for the High School Counselor position. Bob served with distinction in this role until his retirement in 2002, taking great pride in helping countless students navigate their educational and personal challenges.
Bob and Sue were blessed with three daughters who brought immense joy to their lives: Michelle, born in 1967; Melissa born in 1969; and Mollie, born in 1974.
After retirement in 2002, Bob and Sue moved to Ashley, North Dakota, where they enjoyed 17 years of retirement life from 2002 to 2019. In 2019, they returned to Mora, coming full circle to the community that had been such an important part of their lives.
Bob's zest for life was evident in his many interests and hobbies. He was a devoted fan of Willie Nelson and other country music with a particular fondness for "Tennessee Waltz." Bob's sweet tooth was legendary among family and friends ~ delighting in chocolate, black licorice, ice cream, and anything sweet.
Bob's treasured time included coaching Junior High basketball, being a referee for High School volleyball and basketball, golfing, playing cards, fishing, hunting, traveling, and being in God's amazing creation.
Throughout his life, Bob touched the lives of many through his dedication as an educator and counselor, his commitment to his family, and his active participation in his church and community. His warm personality, generous spirit, and genuine care for others created lasting bonds with all who knew him.
Bob will be deeply missed by his beloved wife Sue, his three daughters Michelle (Dan), Melissa (Keith), and Mollie, his five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and all other family members, friends, church members, community members, and past students, whose lives he enriched. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Esther and Harold Gilbert, sister, Lois (Gilbert) Larsen & brother-in-law, Whitey Larsen. Bob's legacy of education, service, belief in God, love, and joy will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.
