Lanz
Oct 3, 1943 — Jun 18, 2024
Sandstone
Richard Duane Lanz Sr., 80, of Sandstone, MN, passed away on June 18, 2024.
It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved father, Richard D. Lanz Sr.
Richard was born to Joseph and Rose Lanz on October 3, 1943, in Pierre, South Dakota. He spent the first part of his life living in Lemmon, South Dakota, where his love of cowboy heroes, horses, and rocks began.
The family moved to St. Paul, where he graduated from Central High School in 1962.
In 1964, he married his first wife Kathy Stoffel, and raised his two awesome children.
Richard for many years was a union printer, ultimately retiring, and starting his own business buying and selling wholesale goods and antiques.
Richard loved hot rods, starting with his first car, a 1957 Chevrolet Sedan. Later he worked with his son to restore an old 1947 Chevrolet. He loved listening to country music, and you would often find him with headphones on next to the stereo, yodeling, "Whoo-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, Yod-el-od-el-lo-ti-de." He would be dancing away to music if he wasn't listening to it.
In 1985, Richard remarried Patricia Leeper and they later moved to live on Grindstone Lake in Sandstone, MN. In November 2023, we moved Richard to Golden Horizons Assisted Living where he received exceptional care.
Richard enjoyed being outdoors; he loved fishing, hunting, camping, and horseback riding, and he never stopped looking for rocks to bring home. Later in life, Richard would escape Minnesota winters and head south to Mexico, Texas, or Florida. Richard also enjoyed a good round of poker and was respected as a good player.
Richard's loving spirit is carried on by his wife, Patty Lanz; his daughter Julie (David Gonsoski), and his son Richard Jr. (Jaqui Cenaiko); his three grandkids, Matthew, Cassidy (James), and Max; and his three great-grandkids, Beau, Daisy, and Leo. He is also survived by his sisters Joane, Emily, Rosella, and Margie; his brother Ed; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Rose Lanz, his siblings Grace, Bob, and Mary Ellen, and his brothers-in-laws Ralph, Herbert, and Gail.
To honor Richard's memory, we will be holding a small Celebration of Life for family members and close friends.
Arrangements by Methven Funeral and Cremation Services of Sandstone, MN.
