Obituary

Morris Roger Carlson, a true Sandstone local through and through, left this world on October 9, 2024, surrounded by the comforting embrace of his loving family. Born in Sandstone on January 27, 1938, Morris was the son of Iner and Alfhild Carlson.

Morrie was born on January 27th, 1938 to parents Iner and Elizabeth Carlson. He spent his formative years at Sand Creek School and attended Sandstone High School where he was an active member of the FFA, choir, band, played basketball and football, and acted in one high school play. He graduated in 1956 and then studied at Bethel (1958) and the University of Minnesota Agriculture School (1959). Morrie then served in the Army National Guard (1960).

Morrie was married to Darlene Koland October 1, 1960. Together they started their family of 6 children (Kari, Kevin, Keith, Karla, Kenny and Kendra). Morrie was a second generation dairy farmer following his father Iner. Morrie milked cows until 2005 when the family shifted to all beef farming. Morrie actively served on the Sandstone Township Board, Sandstone School Board, Sandstone Shipping Association, the Cattlemen's Association, along with various church boards.

It is no secret that Morrie desired to "love thy neighbor" and always took time to share a cup of coffee with those that stopped to visit. He loved to clear land and operate equipment. Morrie once had his pilot's license and commuted by flying himself from school at Bethel back home to the farm. He loved to sing and music was a big part of his life. The radio in the dining room was always on! Morrie could play guitar and the piano and would occasionally sing Swedish hymns he learned during his childhood.

The most important thing to Morrie was his faith in Christ and he was serious about sharing that faith with others. His life was a living testimony in the way he led his family, how he managed the farm, the way he conducted himself in business and what he took a stand for. His convictions were rooted in God's Word and he was unashamed of his faith. Morrie was a proud father and grandfather and it gave him great joy to have his family around him. Hearing his family recite the Lord's Prayer at the Sunday breakfast table was sweet music to his ears!

Morrie is survived by his wife Darlene (married 64 years); his six children Kari (Jay) Gallatin, Kevin (Julie) Carlson, Keith (Ruth) Carlson, Karla (Jim) Freemark, Kenny Carlson, and Kendra (Andy) Anderson; his 31 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Morrie's quiver was full (Psalm 127:5)! He is also survived by his brother John (Phyliss) Carlson, his sister Marlys (Norm) Christiansen and sister-in-law Joanne (Steve) Fahlman . Morrie is preceded in death by his parents Iner and Elizabeth Carlson, and his brothers Richard, Doug and Denny Carlson.

In honor of Morris' life, a funeral service will be held at the Danforth Community Chapel on Monday, October 14, 2024 at 11am. Visitation will be held from 3pm to 6pm on Sunday, October 13, 2024 at the Methven Funeral Home Chapel, Sandstone, MN.
