Mary June Hughes passed away peacefully on April 14th, 2024, at the age of 94 years old. She was born July 4th, 1929 in Lancing, Michigan to parents Charlie and Bessie Anderson. She had one younger sister and three older brothers who she loved dearly. During her life she resided in
several states including; Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Idaho, and Arizona. She returned to Minnesota in October 2018 and for several years was lovingly cared for by the St. Clare long- term care staff and St. Croix hospice staff.
Mary celebrated the 4th of July as if it was just for her. She loved to entertain and never needed a reason to celebrate. She enjoyed singing, dancing, and country music. She was proficient in sewing and as a seamstress made matching outfits for her and Jerry to go out dancing in. She
loved to go fishing.
Mary made friends anywhere she went and lived her life to the fullest. She had a giving heart. She was a social butterfly, fun loving, an avid card player belonging to many card groups including bridge group, the coffee card group and always played to win. She belonged to the red hat society and a painting group. She enjoyed traveling, especially cruises and her trip of a lifetime to Ireland. She was a great storyteller of her many adventures.
She was an avid shopper enjoying garage sales, and thrift shops. Generously giving her treasures to others. She loved to collect things such as tea pots, costume jewelry, southwestern décor, glassware, decks of cards, furniture and many other collectables. She collected limerick toasts which she loved to share with humor.
She was a campfire girls' leader in Anamosa, Iowa and belonged to the VFW auxiliary also in Iowa.
Mary worked at the golf course as an event planner and a kitchen staff in Anamosa, and at the hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa as a patient escort.
Mary attended school in Isle, MN until her senior year. She proudly completed her GED as an adult.
She lived in Isle, MN during early childhood until meeting her husband Jerry Jensen and moved to Anamosa, Iowa.
Mary was raised in the Christian faith and adhered to her Christian values throughout her life. Mary was married to her first husband Jerry Jensen on November 18, 1948, until his death in April of 1981. She later married Irwin Klohs in February 1984 until his death in September 1997 then married Arden Hughes in June of 1998, they were together until he died in April 2005.
She was preceded in death by her parents Charlie and Bessie Anderson, siblings Basil Anderson Robert Anderson, Lyle Anderson, and Betty Roehlke. Spouses; Jerry Jensen, Irwin Klohs and Arden Hughes. Nieces and Nephew; Rene (Anderson) Zepeda, Valorie, and Darlene Hastings.
She is survived by nieces and nephews (who she considered as the children she never had); Nancy Rizer-Schmidt, Julie Dietz, Dale Anderson, Michael Engblom, Daniel Engblom, Kathleen Engblom, Sandy Withington, Lori Engblom, Bryan Engblom, Judy Gubbels, Bobby Anderson, Carrie Frohreich, Dianna Anderson, Vickie Jensen Bunting, Curtis Jensen, John Jensen, Joseph Jensen, stepdaughter Holly Crawley and many extended family members.
In Mary's own words, "Here's to you and here's to me, and if by chance we disagree then to heck with you and here's to me."
A memorial service will be held June 15th 11am at Faith Lutheran Church Isle, MN.
