With great sadness, we announce the sudden passing of Kenneth Edward Hamalainen on August 27, 2025. Born on August 6, 1942, in Finlayson, MN, Ken was raised on a farm by his parents Waino and Jennie Hamalainen with his younger siblings Kathleen and Glen.   He loved his family, was an exceptionally intelligent man, skilled at fixing anything, loved to laugh, and had a passion for loud singing, especially in the early morning hours.

Ken attended District 49 rural school until 9th grade when he transferred to Finlayson High School.   Prior to going to school at age 6, he primarily spoke Finnish at home.  During high school, he played basketball, which he enjoyed throughout his life, even playing in his 50's on a men's league in the Twin Cities.   When he was not at school, working on the farm, or playing basketball, he worked at the Midland gas station pumping gas and doing minor car repairs.  He also attended St. John's Church in Finlayson with his family, leading to a lifetime of faith in God. Ken's first travel experiences were in his youth, traveling to D.C. and New York City.   He would continue to travel throughout his life.

In 1961, Ken took a train from Finlayson station to Chicago where he attended DeVry Technical Institute, which was one of only two pioneering schools in electronics at that time.  He graduated with a degree in electronic technology and design.  After graduation, his first job was at Argonne National Laboratory, where he worked on an early synchrotron, a type of particle accelerator.

Chicago is where he met Ethel Wood, and they enjoyed their time together boating, dancing, and visiting family.  They were married in 1964. They welcomed their first child, Pamela, in 1965 and second child, Roger, in 1966.

To be closer to his family, they moved to Bloomington, where he took a job at Control Data.  They had their third child, Julie, in 1968. Many weekends were spent at Ken's parents' farm, visiting with family, helping with farm work, and enjoying the sauna.  Eventually, Ken and his family moved to Pine City where he became a full-time farmer.  While Ken and Ethel eventually departed ways, they maintained an amicable relationship, sharing love for their children, 8 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.  Later, Ken started his own business Mattson Scientific, a computer company. Even in his 80s, he was known for helping others with their computer needs.

Ken is survived by his children, Pam Rosencrans, Roger Hamalainen, Julie (Dave) Miller; grandchildren, Christina (Mike) Barnes, Ashley (Jason) Kann, Jennifer (Nate) Nordly, Blaine Rosencrans, James Rosencrans, Michael (Katrina) Hamalainen, Lexi (Duel) Frye, and Noah Miller; twelve great grandchildren; and sister, Kathleen (Frank) Morse; and brother, Glen (Barbara) Hamaline. Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Waino and Jennie Hamalainen.

A funeral service to honor Kenneth is being held at 2 pm on Sunday, August 31, 2025 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Finlayson, MN with Pastor Gary Zakin officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.  Burial will take place at Finnish Lutheran Cemetery following the service.
