Grammy, as we all called her was a mighty fierce woman.  I always told her she was a foot over dwarf.  But in that small frame was a giant.  She was born in 1931 at the start of the Great Depression.  She was the third daughter of four, born to a coal miner named Charles Kirkwood and his wife Mary, from Lonaconing, Maryland.  She grew up in that area and graduated from Central High School in 1950.

In September of 1952 she met our dad, Don G. Moyer at a dance.  They were engaged in November and were married on February 28, 1953.  On January 12, 1968 their first son, Don G. Moyer Jr. was born.  Not long after that, on October 27, 1969 a second son, Frank E. Moyer was born.  They finished off their quiver with a third son, Lawrence A. Moyer on July 30, 1971.  Home for this crew was next to Savage River in rural Garrett County, MD.

On October 22, 1984, our dad passed and that is when mom became our ultimate hero.  She worked several jobs to provide for three teenage boys, often times going without so we could have whatever it was that we wanted/needed.

Grammy loved her family.  Our oldest brother Don married Theresa (Ours) in June 1991.  They have two sons, Don G. Moyer (Ashley) living in Cumberland Maryland and Christopher S. Moyer (Lacey) living in Keyser, West Virginia.  Sadly, Don passed in June 1998.  Theresa is remarried to Shannon and they live in Short Gap, West Virginia.  Middle son Frank married Shelley Jo (Nylund) in June 1990.  They live in Sandstone, Minnesota.  Their family consists of Hannah S.B Naundorf (Joshua) living in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, son Micah J.J Moyer (Ashley) living in Mound, Minnesota, Nathanael JJ Moyer, Sandstone, Elizabeth J.M Moyer, Sandstone, Phoebe I.R Moyer, Sandstone and Brooklyn S.R Moyer, Sandstone.  Our little brother Lawrence married Tammy (Ours) in October 1990.  They have two sons, Lawrence Jr. (Destiny) living in Frostburg, Maryland and Tristen J. Moyer living in Westernport, MD.  Great grands are Ciara, Cyrus, Waylan, Idalyn, Nova, Annikin, Kinleigh, Denali, Haven.

We will forever remember the time spent with Grammy.  She taught some of us how to crochet.  She was famous in Coney for being the lady who made hanging towels.   She loved to crochet Polish sweaters for all the grand daughters, daughter in laws and anyone else that she thought needed one.  She was great at this craft and always said it was what kept her fingers from getting stiff.  Grammy loved to sing.  Whenever we got in the car, she would start singing.  Some of her favorites were "Great is Thy Faithfulness" and "Amazing Grace".  She had a great set of pipes and could sing very well.  All the kids, and grands knew the song, "Cannonball King" which we just found out was actually the "Cannibal King" LOL.  Every one of the family considered it a treat when she would call on our birthday.  She would always sing to us and at the end would add, "and many more".  She was fun to be with.  She loved to tell stories of her youth, her marriage, her dog Cindy and of course anything to do with our dad.  She loved to bake and every one that knew her would love getting a package of short bread cookies at Christmas.  She passed on her favorite recipes of Apple Harvest Cake and Peach Cobbler to her grand kids.  Baking her recipes was fun, but what made it extra special was the time she spent with us in the kitchen.  She was a gentle giant and loved us all right to the end.

Grammy laughed with us and made sure we were all taken care of.  We held her hand, read scripture and sang to her as she closed her eyes on this side of glory.  She knew Jesus as her personal savior, and when she awoke in glory, she saw Him face to face.  Praise the LORD!

There will be a private family memorial service this summer at Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery in Western Maryland.
