Obituary

Hjordis Margarete Fogt, born December 25, 1925, to Einar and Olga Schatvet, passed away at her home with family by her side on October 5, 2025, two months shy of her 100th birthday.

Hjordis was preceded in death by her husband Arlis, and only son Derek.

She is survived by her seven daughters: Kathleen (Tim), Jacquelyn, Dorothy (Marv), Alayne (Jay), Joan (Dan), Nancy and Betsy, her daughter-in-law Lorelei, her sister Helen, also many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and extended family members.

A deeply spiritual person, mom found strength and comfort in her strong faith and convictions. Her belief in God and His promises sustained her through life's sorrows-especially the loss of dad and our brother, Derek.

Our mother's life was defined by hard work. If you weren't working, you SHOULD be. Prior to getting married, mom worked at Christensen's Danish Bakery and mastered bread baking. She made white, wheat, Danish pumpernickel and even donuts. Derek was famous for snatching a hot donut when her back was turned. Those skills were tastefully enjoyed by generations of our family for over 75 years. She was both a fabulous baker as well as an exceptional cook.

Each year by mid-April the dining room was bursting with pots of seedlings waiting to be planted. Most of her gardening was driven by the need to provide food for our ever-expanding family, but she also loved the beauty of flowers. Her favorite section of our garden was hands-down the cabbages. She exclaimed at their size and weight and how many she would need to fill a couple crocks for sauerkraut. She liked a tidy garden and could be seen out hoeing weeds at first light. As she repeatedly reminded us, "August IS the weediest month!"

She was a master canner and preserver. She made jam, jellies and syrups from berries and fruit both grown and wild.

Like many people did in that time, mom made most of our clothing - including even our underwear, after taking a lingerie sewing class.  Mom loved babies. She made blankets for each new baby born into our family.

In her younger years, she was member of the neighborhood Eastside Sewing Circle. When it was her turn to host the "sewing meeting" she would always make fancy desserts, which we were forbidden to touch.

Mom especially loved that the farm became a weekend destination. The bigger the family crowd, the happier she was.  Even though our family was large—very large—mom took a real interest in each of us.  The pages of her journals were filled with entries detailing the pride of her grandkids' accomplishments and milestones along with random weather facts and crop progress.

Devoted to one another, Mom and Dad had a wonderful life together.
