Obituary

Herbert Elmer Sikkink, 90, of Hinckley, MN, went to be with the Lord on April 11, 2026. Herb was a beloved brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Herb was born in Hinckley, MN, to Stuart and Elizabeth Sikkink on April 16, 1935. (In spite of what the birth certificate says, his mother insisted that his birthday is the 15th). Herb worked on the family farm as a child and continued to farm on his property in the township of Clover, east of Hinckley, well into his 8th decade. He always enjoyed working in the field whether it was with the horse team, Bob and Louie, in his youth or on his air-conditioned John Deere tractor in his 80s.

Herb went to Sikkink Country School through 8th grade and graduated from Hinckley High School in 1953. Later he trained as a pipefitter and was employed with the Duluth Local 11 Union (at the same time as working on the farm) for more than 60 years.

Herb served his community as a school board member for the Hinckley school district and as a Pine County assessor. He was a fire warden for more than forty years. He donated his time to Grindstone Lake Bible Camp, where he also served on the board. Herb tirelessly used his skills to help his neighbors and friends.

From 2003 to 2019, Herb travelled 28 times to Haiti, where he provided solar-powered hot running water to a hospital; bathrooms and water to schools; and an irrigation system to a farming community. One year, he planned and directed workers to raise a water tower on top of the hospital—without the use of heavy equipment.

Herb loved meeting and talking to new and old friends. He always had something to say and jokes to share.

Herb's faith was essential to his life. He was baptized and raised in the 1 st Presbyterian Church of Hinckley where he served as an usher, deacon, and elder. He continued as elder emeritus until his death.

Herb is survived by his devoted wife of 25 years, Lucille Sikkink; his children, Donelda Cox, Robert Sikkink, and Albert Sikkink; 21 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Donald Sikkink, Lyle Sikkink, Betty Carlson, and Carolyn Schaefer. He was preceded in death by his son, Hughbert Sikkink, and his wife of 42 years, Ruth Sikkink.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2026 at 11:00AM at the First Presbyterian Church in Hinckley, Minnesota with Pastor Dan Brendsel officiating.  There will be a visitation on Friday, April 17, 2026 from 5:00PM-7:00PM at the church as well as one hour prior to the service.  Burial will take place at Rosehill Cemetery following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be given in Herb's name to Grindstone Lake Bible Camp, Harvest Christian School, or 1 st Presbyterian Church.
