Harley Harry Volk of Sandstone, Minnesota passed away on June 16, 2023 at the age of 87 at his home in Sandstone, Minnesota.
Harley was born on August 11, 1935 in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota to William and Esther (Schultz) Volk. When Harley was just two his family moved to a farm west of Rutledge, Minnesota. This is where he grew up helping on the family farm while attending the local country school, as well as, the Willow River School.
Harley began his driving career at the age of 14. His first truck driving job was hauling pulp wood to Cloquet, Minnesota for his brother. Then in 1952 at the age of 17 he went to the Twin Cities seeking work and found a job at Seeger Refrigeration.
He met Jeanne Brokaw through mutual friends in October 1953 and they were married in Hinckley, Minnesota on June 30, 1954.
In 1955, Harley and Jeanne left Minnesota and went to New Mexico where Harley worked as a driver for a construction company building the runways for the airport. During their time in New Mexico, they welcomed their daughter Linda and their son Larry. In 1959 Harley and Jeanne decided to move back to Minnesota and made Forest Lake, Minnesota their next home. They welcomed three more children, their sons Gary and Greg and their daughter Laurie.
For the next ten years Harley drove truck for Hanky Grain and during the off seasons he plowed snow in and around the Forest Lake, Minnesota area.
In 1970, Harley & Jeanne and their family moved to Sandstone, Minnesota to a small hobby farm west of town. Harley began driving fuel tankers for Transport, Inc out of Esko, Minnesota. In 1980, Harley started his own trucking business, H & H Trucking, purchased his first truck and became an owner/operator. He drove all over the US and Canada until he retired in 2002.
Harley and Jeanne enjoyed traveling with their 5th wheel camper and found themselves in Texas where in 2003 they purchased a home in Valhalla Park and became Winter Texans. Harley enjoyed the warm weather, spent time swimming, playing cards, evening golf cart rides through the park, and Friday night outings with the gang from the park.
Harley enjoyed camping, four wheeling, playing cards, bird/squirrel watching, family get togethers, friends/family picnics, miniature golf and going out to eat.
Harley is proceeded in death by his daughter, Linda, his son Greg, his grandson David, parents William and Esther Volk, 4 brothers, LeRoy Volk, Lloyd Volk, Harvey Volk and Wally Volk and sister, Darlene Odebraski.
Harley is survived by Jeanne his wife of 68 years, his sons Larry Volk of Sandstone Minnesota, Gary (Betty) Volk of Sandstone, Minnesota and his daughter Laurie Volk of Lindstrom, Minnesota. His sister, Delores (Gary) Harmon of Mora, Minnesota, sister in-laws Joyce Volk of Sandstone, Minnesota and Doris Volk of Sandstone, Minnesota. 15 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held for Harley at 1 pm on Friday, June 23, 2023 at the Methven Funeral Chapel in Sandstone, MN with Pastor Kate Mensing officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at a later date.
