Gary was born on January 21st, 1947, to Carlyle and Ruth Myrvold in Sandstone, Minnesota.

Gary graduated from Sandstone High School in 1965 and began his Navy military service in January of 1966, being discharged in May of 1970. Gary earned several service medals during his military deployment. He served on the USS Oriskany operating primarily in the Pacific Ocean. Gary was involved in 10 different battles while serving his nation in the Vietnam War. During 1966, one of the worst shipboard fires since World War II broke out on the USS Oriskany. Gary was part of the fire crew on the ship at the time of the fire breaking out. Over the years after his military service, Gary spent time in North Carolina working construction, becoming a construction foreman, building housing apartments. In 1980 Gary had moved back to his home state, living in Forest Lake, Minneapolis/St Paul, Stillwater, and Coon Rapids close to his brother and family, so he could spend time with everybody and work in the area. Gary did roofing and worked as an over the road long haul truck driver. He enjoyed the travel and shared many stories over the years. Gary enjoyed fishing, tinkering with repairs, growing vegetables at his home and canning them. He loved being in the kitchen and cooking. Gary moved back to the Finlayson/Sandstone area and was married in 1980. Gary spent his last years living with his father, helping at the homestead and helping the neighbors haul feed and deliver truckloads of products. After a few years of dealing with cancer, Gary passed away on October 26, 2023, surrounded by his family at the hospital overlooking Lake Superior in Duluth MN. A view that he enjoyed while he was there.

Gary was proceeded in death by his parents, Carlyle and Ruth and two nephews. He is survived by his sons, Jeremy and Nicholas; his daughter, Leah; eight grandchildren; five brothers; one sister; 25 nieces and nephews (42 great, 10 great great). Gary will be missed by all that knew him over the years.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Gary on Saturday, June 8, 2024 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Westside Park in Hinckley, MN following his 10 a.m. burial with military honors at Spring Park Cemetery in Sandstone, MN
