Duane "Mac" Donald McQuoid, age 96, of Isle MN, passed away on July 18, 2024, surrounded by his family.

Mac was born July 11, 1928, in Pipestone, MN to Minnie (Lopau) and Franklin McQuoid. He attended school there until they moved to Onamia where he graduated. In 1946, during WWII, he enlisted in the Navy and was very proud to become a Seabee.

On September 26, 1951, Mac was united in marriage to Shirley Mae Brandt in Cove, MN. They made their home in Cove where he operated a dairy farm, Vern Acres, until moving to Spring Lake Park where Mac worked at Paper Calmenson & Co in St. Paul building bridges. They had three kids, Terry, Susie, and Mike. In 1962, after saving up enough money to buy their own farm, Mac and Shirley moved north of Milaca where they bought their own dairy farm. He loved farming and was a natural at it. In 1973 after two of their children graduated, they decided to quit farming and moved to Onamia where Mac helped build their home. A new career was born, and he became a carpenter. In 1980, he started driving a gas transport for his friend Clint. After retiring, they wintered in Mesa, AZ and spent their summers in Isle, MN. About 10 years ago, they decided to move back to MN fulltime and lived with Terry.

He enjoyed the company of his best cat buddy Tuna. Mac loved playing cribbage! He would play with anyone who stopped by. Often people would joke that they wouldn't play with him anymore if he didn't let them win once in a while. Through the years he enjoyed playing tennis and golf, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, and volunteering at the woodshop.

Mac was the best dad and grandpa ever! He loved to help whoever needed it. Mac was multi-talented and could do just about anything. If something needed to be done, he found a way to get it done. He helped build decks, pole sheds, houses, shingled roofs, and smaller handyman type projects. He also enjoyed helping Terry at McQuoid's Inn building condos, mowing and doing maintenance work.

He loved taking the grandkids to The Gunflint. First to the cabin and later camping on the island. We all have lots of fun memories of those trips. He loved talking to anyone he met about fishing. He looked forward to going to Devil's Lake and his yearly family trips there to celebrate his birthday. He just celebrated his 96th birthday there a few weeks ago fishing and beating his family in cribbage. He looked forward to this family gathering most of all every year.

Mac is survived by his son, Terry McQuoid, daughter Sue (David) Mandt, daughter-in-law Sheri McQuoid, beloved life-long friend Ardean Brandt, grandchildren Kevin (Karen) McQuoid, Aaron (Trish) McQuoid, Chris (Traci) Gustafson, Nicole (Ken) Allee, Jeff (Christy) Gustafson, Shawn McQuoid, Tommy McQuoid, 12 great- grandchildren, 9 great-great grandchildren.

Mac was proceeded in death by his loving wife Shirley and son Mike.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Eleanor Foster Cemetery in Cove MN, memorials may be sent to Terry McQuoid at 1699 Hwy 27, Isle, MN 56342. The cemetery was very dear to Mac and Shirley's heart as they were caretakers for over 20 years. Mac also served on the cemetery board. These small rural cemeteries are in desperate need of money for their maintenance funds.  Numerous family and friends have been buried there.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 3, 2024 at the Isle Evangelical Free Church with Pastor Mark Lee officiating. Visitation will be from 2 until 3 P.M. at the church.  A private, family burial will take place at Foster Cemetery.
