Obituary

David Lawrence Hopkins passed away on Friday, February 7, 2020 at his home in Hinckley with his family by his side. He was 71 years old.

Dave has lived his entire life in Hinckley. He graduated from Hinckley High School in 1966 and attended Pine Technical College for auto mechanics, graduating from there in 1968. While working as a mechanic, Dave helped his mother run Hoppy's Café & Grocery which he later purchased. At the same time, he was a bus driver for the Hinckley School. It is well known that Dave worked multiple jobs at a time! When asked what he did for a living, it was easier to list the things he hasn't done than to try to list the things he has done. He was a man of many talents! Later he attended Hennipen Technical College and became a mechanical engineer. He then worked in Minneapolis building hydraulic power units and in 1991 he went to work at Grand Casino as a Facilities Supervisor, a job he simply loved. He retired from the Casino in 2016. Dave married Judy Borchard on July 10, 1971. They have 4 children: Bradley, Kimberly, Keith & Tiffany. Dave was so proud of the kids and their accomplishments and was very involved in their lives as they grew up. Dave joined the Hinckley Fire Dept. on January 1, 1970 and spent 49 years as a volunteer fireman and was fire chief for 9 years. He was a charter member of the Hinckley Lions Club, serving as the second president of the club. He left the club briefly while working in the cities and rejoined later. He was the gambling manager for the Lions charitable gambling for 14 years. Dave has served on the Hinckley City Council for over 20 years and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, serving his church and was on the Thrivent Financial board as Financial Director for many years. In his spare time, Dave enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time in his wood shop. He especially enjoyed the trips to Lake of the Woods with the boys and spending time at the hunting land. He loved the time spent with the grandkids & looked forward to the weeks that Brooke would spend here in the summer.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters-in-law Lorrie and Joyce.

He is survived by his wife Judy, sons Bradley (Jill), Keith (Joanne), daughters, Kimberly of Hinckley & Tiffany Nelson (Aaron) of Lake City, 5 grandchildren: Davie, Sophia, Brooke, Joey, and Carson; siblings, Shirley Pollmann, Linda Beal, Alan Hopkins & families; brothers-in-law, Chuck, Ed (Peggy), Alan (Maryjane), Gary (Diane), Mike, sister-in-law, Betty (Jim) & families; loving cousin, Mary Liz, special family, Darren & Wendy Augeson; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hinckley with Rev. Mike Metzler officiating. Music is being provided by Mike Hansen, Sue Hickle and Kimberly Hopkins.
