Darnell "Bagonegiizhig Makade Gidagaa Bebezhigoganzgii" James St. John, a beloved husband, father, and friend, unexpectedly passed away on July 15, 2026, at the age of 50. Born on June 11, 1976, in Sandstone, MN, Darnell spent most of his life in Hinckley, MN, where he made a lasting impact on the lives of those around him.
Darnell graduated from Grantsburg High School and went on to work in the roofing industry, notably with St. John Roofing, and as a supervisor for the Mille Lacs Band. As a proud member of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, Darnell carried his heritage with pride and was dedicated to his community.
He married Mia St. John, on October 16, 2007, in Pine City, MN. Darnell was a devoted father to his children. His family was everything to him, and he cherished every moment spent with them. Darnell had a huge heart, always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need. His hobbies included agate picking, working on vehicles and home projects, and participating in spiritual ceremonies and lodges, which brought him much joy and fulfillment.
Darnell is survived by his wife Mia; his children, Keaton St. John, Darnell St. John Jr., Travina St. John, Cory Benjamin, Alexander St. John, Phoenix St. John; his mother, Nora St. John; adopted brother Lonnie Powers; and his siblings: Brandon and Louie Belisle, Joe McGeshick, Amelia, Amanda, and Jessica Bildeau. He is preceded in death by his cherished grandparents, Margaret Allen and Frank St. John, his son, Randy St. John, brother, Nicholas Bildeau and stepfather, Sonny Bildeau.
A wake will begin at dusk on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at the Aazhoomog Community Center, where friends and family can gather to share stories and remember Darnell. The funeral service will take place at the same location, starting at 10 AM on Sunday, July 19, 2026. where we'll celebrate the life of a truly remarkable man. Darnell's legacy of love and kindness will always be remembered in the hearts of those who knew him.
