Darin Donald Miller was born August 19, 1965, in Moose Lake, Minnesota to Donald and Una Miller. Darin's education started at a very young age, attending Friesland School for disabled children and later graduating from Sandstone High School in 1986. Darin lived at Rhine Lake with his mother, Una, until 1988, when he moved to the CIP (Community Involvement Program) group home in Sandstone, Minnesota. In 1992, a house was built for Darin in Sandstone where he lived the rest of his life.
Darin was employed at Banning Junction restaurant as a dishwasher for 15 years. Darin worked at PHASE (Pine Habilitation and Supportive Employment) in Sandstone. He and his dear friend Sam picked up local businesses mail and delivered it to the post office. His next career adventure with PHASE was as a sanitation recycle sorter.
Darin loved animals, especially his dog Emily. Sam Hughes has been Darin's best friend for 35 years. He enjoyed traveling and went to Lake of the Woods fishing, Hawaii, Florida, Fort Myers for spring training, CMA Awards in Nashville, Yellowstone, and Colorado. He was passionate about hard rock music, All-Star Wrestling, Diet Pepsi and Subway! He enjoyed playing air guitar, UNO, raking leaves, putting up firewood, sitting with friends and family around a campfire, and loved fishing and camping.
Darin passed away surrounded by family on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at Essentia Hospital, Duluth at the age of 58 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Una Miller, his sister Dian (Larry) Nielsen, great niece Isla Jackson and great nephew Bret Stults. He is survived by his 6 sisters, 1 brother; Dawn (John) Johnson, Denise (Douglas) Degerstrom, Deedree (Rusty) Ludwig, Doreen (Todd) Gamble, Damita Jo (David) Chasson; brother Daniel (Hope) Miller and Deana (Martin) Arndt; best friend Sam Hughs; 18 nieces and nephews and many great great nieces and nephews.
He will be missed deeply by his family and friends; his tender love and humor will live on.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, March 22, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke's Catholic Church, Sandstone, MN with Fr. Joseph Sirba officiating. Visitation prior to mass begins at 10:00 a.m. at the church. Following the service Lunch will be served at the Pine County Historical Museum, located at 6333 Andersen Alle, Askov, MN. An evening visitation will be held Thursday, March 21, 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Methven Funeral Home in Sandstone, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. for those that want to attend. The burial will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Panther Park; a children's playground located in downtown Sandstone. The memorials may be mailed to City of Sandstone, Attn: Panther Park Fencing Donations, P.O. Box 641, Sandstone, MN 55072.
