Obituary

Carol Nelson died on Thursday, October 24, 2024 at GracePointe Crossing in Cambridge.  She was 92 years old.

Carol Loraine (Hall) Nelson was born to Carl and Astrid (Peterson) Hall on December 10, 1931 at home in Atwater, MN with a physician attending. She completed the family, having two older brothers, Cecil and Ralph. Carol attended Country School District 42 through 5th grade when it consolidated with the Atwater School District. She graduated from Atwater High School. Carol then completed LPN training at Rice Hospital in Willmar and worked there for one year before traveling to the San Francisco Bay area where she received her Registered Nurse training at Franklin Hospital and then worked in California for a few years in clinic and hospital settings. She loved being a nurse with her quiet, calm and caring manner.

In 1954 Carol realized that she did not have a personal relationship with God. It was through a nursing classmate and friends she met at a young adult bible study group at a church in San Francisco that she pursued a personal relationship with God and became a born-again Christian. Her faith was evident in how she lived her life with love, compassion and integrity. Carol returned to Minnesota and met the love of her life, Norman, while roller skating in Rush City one evening. After a long-distance courtship because she was again in California caring for a cousin who was dying from cancer, they married on September 1, 1962. Five children were blessed to have her as their mother — Roger, Joyce, Doris, Darlene and Brian. Carol and Norman raised the family in Hinckley on the farm and were active in the community.

Some of the things Carol enjoyed included nursing, learning about health-related issues, baking, sewing, gardening, reading, doing puzzles, visiting with her children and grandchildren, friends and relatives. Through the years, she was involved with Christian Woman's Club, Clover Friendly Neighbors Club, Clover Community Church, Gideons, and Super Adults. In 2020 she moved to GracePointe Crossing in Cambridge, MN where she thrived and was wonderfully cared for by the staff who thought she was such a special lady.

Carol was known for having a kind heart and the warmest smile. She was full of wisdom and had a good sense of humor. Because she was filled with compassion, she sought to help others with their physical and spiritual needs. She was dearly loved by her children and their spouses, along with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Astrid Hall; her husband, Norman Nelson; a brother and sister-in-law, Cecil and LaNea Hall; and a great grandson, Hudson Allen. She is survived by her children Roger (Judy) Nelson of Hinckley, MN; Joyce (Brad) Hovermale of Canton, MI; Doris (David) Frost of New Brighton, MN; Darlene Nelson of Alexandria, VA; and Brian (Tonja) Nelson of Balsam Lake, WI; grandchildren (Melanie, Jonathan, Jessica, Alyssa, Ryan, Rachel, Emily, Matthew, Paige and Lisbeth); a great grandchild, Brooke; a brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Caroline Hall of Atwater, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
