Barbara
Newton
Jan 4, 1937 — Aug 13, 2025
Mora
Barbara Ann Newton went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 13, 2025 at St. Clare Living Community in Mora. She was 88 years old.
Barb was born to Russell and Francis Porterfield on January 4, 1937 in San Diego, CA. She had two other sisters, Carol and Elinore that were born in California. Barb's parents divorced and Francis then married James Clough and the family moved to Kellerton, Iowa.
In 1954 Barb met the man of her dreams, Dean Newton when he was fresh out of the Army. They were united in marriage in March of 1955 and they moved to Minneapolis where he worked. Together they had three children, Roger, Jonni and Terri. They moved to Bethel, MN in 1960 and raised their children, farmed and raised great gardens. Dean worked in the Twin Cities for the railroad for 20 years and Barb worked different jobs in Cambridge, MN. In 1972 they bought property in Kanabec County and moved the whole family – cattle and all - there in 1974. They lived there happily for many years, raising cattle and beautiful gardens. Barb continued to work in both the Isle and Mora area. Dean passed away in 2011 and Barb continued to live at the home until 2015 when she moved to the Dala House.
Barbara loved to work hard, the outdoors, feeding birds and having family around for deer hunting season and the holidays. After Dean's death her faith in our Lord Jesus Christ became much stronger and she was very devout in her faith. She will be missed by family, friends and all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Dean; her parents, Russell and Francis; her son in law Jim Staege and brothers and sisters in law, sister Carol Butcher, and several nieces and nephews.
Barbara is survived by her son, Roger (Jill) Newton of Ogilvie; daughters, Jonni (David) Paulsen of Isle, Terri Staege of Cambridge; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sister Elinore (Bud) of Las Vegas and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, August 25, 2025 at Dresser-Methven Funeral Home in Mora with Rev. Brenda Wicklund officiating. Visitation will be from 10-11 A.M. Casket bearers are Roger Newton, Jeremy Newton, Brody Newton, David Strelow, Todd Holmes and Lynn Stegeman. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery.
